Learning new things: PICO-8 and Music

Finally! Something new!

Here's a development preview of Toney the Music Tutor! This was super fun to develop, and it's my first big foray into development for the PICO-8 fantasy console.

When I first heard of PICO-8, honestly I thought "Great, another game engine to learn." But when I actually checked it out, I was so pleasantly surprised. I posted earlier about the joys and benefits of developing for PICO-8. And they all hold true here.

It was a challenge developing a sheet music layout engine in the PICO-8. I think I used roughly 2000 tokens just on the layout and handling, but I'm proud of the results and hope to optimize the code even further.

Toney is still very much a WIP. There's so much content I want to add, including new lessons, types of questions and challenges, and I definitely want to add a lot more fun and polish! So definitely look out for updates in the future!

I'm also really looking for feedback on this idea. This kind of app is something I've wanted desperately in my own music practice in the past, but never found gamified in quite the way I wanted. I especially want input from newcomers to music about the lesson content and flow. I know things can be improved in future releases, but really want to know what beginners would find most useful.

Anyway, enough from me. Go play it here!
