BoxTruck is a different way to manage your DOSBox configurations.

It gives you fast and easy control over your disks, and by treating DOSBox instances more like Virtual Machines, makes it more intuitive to configure and run DOS and Windows.

Currently in early access (current release is bleeding-edge alpha), it aims to be an end-to-end configuration and management solution for those who want to install older versions of DOS and Windows for gaming or productivity. Easy to use, but advanced enough to give you full control!

Key features:

  • "Site-based" management with Cross-platform support:
    • Maintain a library of VMs and Disks, and share it easily between computers, and even different versions of DOSBox.
    • Designed from the ground up to maximize cross-platform support when sharing Site files
  • Easily create, import, and manage disks
    • With support for Floppies, Hard Disks and CD-ROMs (*), you won't need to manually craft "mount" commands anymore to set up your drives
  • Support for advanced image formats (#)
    • Save space and stop pre-allocating your entire disk image with QCow2 image format support (*)
  • Support for building new images from existing files and directories (*)
    • Import your existing images, or create new ones easily

(* = roadmap item, not yet fully supported)
(# = requires DOSBox-X or compatible variant)

Basic Startup

  1. Install and run BoxTruck using the Itch.io app or another distribution method
  2. Click New to set up a new Site object
    1. Pick a directory on disk to create the Site structure (a "site.ini" file along with several sub-directories) and save the "site.ini" to that location.
    2. Give it a name!
    3. Select the versions of tools you'd like to use. The defaults included with BoxTruck work fine, but you can always customize!
    4. Now you're ready to create VMs and Disks, attach some Disks to your VMs, and start running them!

Development Status

BoxTruck is actively being developed in my free time as interest allows. It is perfectly usable, but may contain bugs and there is no guarantee or warranty against loss of data. NOT for use in production environments.

The current release is 0.1.1a0 (alpha) for Linux ARM64 (e.g. Raspberry Pi, ChromeOS Linux) and 0.1.0a0 for Windows.
